Staff Updates

I am very pleased to say that Carol has passed her APDT qualification with flying colours. As you all know, all trainee instructors are working towards this qualification and when I feel they are ready they do their assessment they are put forward. The assessment involves going to a training centre and running an hour course with a group of dogs the trainer has never met before and are not necessarily well behaved dogs!! There is also a written test and a question section after the practical. All in all, an intimidating procedure. My job is to ensure that candidates are ready for assessment prior to taking the test. Carol is an Instructor at the Amersham club and also takes the Gundog classes for me on a Monday morning as well as carrying out several 1-2-1s every week. Ensuring all Instructors are APDT qualified is important to me and means we maintain standards and can offer a guarantee to all our clients of Kind, Fair and Effective Training.

HWTM

We are looking for additional members for the Heelwork to Music class and would like to start a new beginners class in the New Year or early Spring. If you are interested in this 'fun' class then please contact me for more details.

Gundog

Carol's Gundog classes have proved to be very popular in their first year. Remember if you would like to try your pet Gundog in these classes then they are just for fun but will teach all the elements of Gundog work, including whistle work, retrieving and scent work. It is always wonderful to see breeds doing what comes naturally to them.

Progressing Your Training

We have many options for you to continue your training once you have finished the basic puppy, pet and advanced classes. We have the Outdoor classes on a Thursday daytime, which help you work on recall and emergency stops and general control in an Outdoor location. We also, as previously mentioned have the Heelwork to Music class on a Monday. Gundog classes are suitable for any Gundog breed and are a lovely way of teaching your dog to use their instincts in a controlled way. Agility is open to anyone whose dog is older than a year and is great fun. All our classes are open all year round. Please do get in touch if you need any additional information about any of the courses.

Evening Agility

These will start again in April once we have lighter evenings. Please let me know if you would like to take part and I will put you on the waiting list. These classes are open to any dog although they must be a year of age to take part. I will do a beginners and a progressors for those who want to rejoin from last year's evening courses.

Rally O

This is a new fun activity which we hope to be introducing in 2010. It is based on competition obedience but is much simpler and much more fun. This class will be great for anyone who wants to extend their basic obedience and introduce some fun commands and give them more mental stimulation. The emphasis will be on fun, not precision and it is about having a good 'working' relationship with your dog. Please see http://www.apdt.co.uk/ukrally.asp for more information. We expect this to start in the Spring so watch this space!!

Dog Boarding

I am able to offer Dog Boarding for long weekends only. Because of my working schedule these are from Wednesday/Thursday to Monday only. I am fully insured and will ensure your dog gets plenty of exercise and attention during this time. Your dog must be sociable with other dogs and travel well. I can offer training during these weekends also. Please ask me for more details.

Evening Recall Workshops

Emma will be running some evening recall workshops for people who are unable to do a daytime recall course. These will be for small groups of approx 4 and will be held from April throughout the Summer. Again please let me know if you are interested in these and I will inform you when we have the booking details.

Children at the Clubs

Children are very welcome at the dog clubs and I encourage them to learn how to handle the dog correctly and be involved in the training. They must however be supervised by an adult at all times to ensure the dog is under control (and the child!) For small children it may be best to bring a game or book for them to sit quietly with. Do not allow children to touch any dog which it does not know without checking with the owner first - even puppies.
