Coape Diploma

In August 2008 I completed the COAPE (Centre for Applied Pet Ethology) Diploma in “The Practical Aspects of Companion Animal Behaviour and Training”. I qualified as a behaviourist with distinction gaining an A+ for every unit. Although I have been carrying out behavioural work for many years and hold other behavioural qualifications, this qualification allows me to work on Veterinary referred behaviour cases.

Staff Updates

As the dog club continues to grow, you may again have seen some new faces. Estelle is now a trainee at the Bledlow Ridge Monday evening club. She is currently completing the Post Graduate Diploma in Animal Behaviour at Southampton University and she is training with me for her APDT qualification.

Linda now carries out class entry assessments for me. Any older dog who enters classes is assessed first to ensure their suitability for the class and to ensure they know the basics of how we train. Linda is also taking the Tuesday afternoon beginners agility class, who are all doing extremely well!

Carol and Liz have been doing some basic one to one lessons under my supervision. Carol’s speciality is Gun Dog Training. Carol, Liz and Linda are also still in training for their APDT qualification.

I am sure you will all join me in congratulating Hannah and her husband Gav on the birth of their baby girl Taylor May on 18th December 2008. Both Mum and baby are doing very well

Further congratulations go to Agility Instructor Kate who gained 3rd place at Olympia Agility finals with her terrier JJ.

HWTM

My very dedicated Heelwork to Music group have been working very hard on new routines and we now have one completed routine and one which is a work in progress! We are hoping to go to a few local fetes or fairs in the Summer to perform, so hopefully we’ll see a few of you there supporting us!

Summer Agility Plans

Agility classes continue to be as popular as ever and we have new plans for additional agility classes in the summer. I will be taking some evening agility classes helped by Linda and Linda hopes to run some children’s agility daytime classes during the summer holidays. Please let me know if you might be interested in either of these options. It is likely that the evening agility class will be on a Tuesday evening but that is to be confirmed. On Tuesday 23rd December at the final agility sessions of the year we held some fun competitions in each class. Well done to Carol and Ruby, Amanda and Chip and Brenda and Lilly who won the prize of a tunnel to take home and practice with!!

Children at the Clubs

Children are very welcome at the dog clubs and I encourage them to learn how to handle the dog correctly and be involved in the training. They must however be supervised by an adult at all times to ensure the dog is under control (and the child!) For small children it may be best to bring a game or book for them to sit quietly with. Do not allow children to touch any dog which it does not know without checking with the owner first - even puppies.
